Dental veneers are a commonly used cosmetic treatment aimed at enhancing the smile. In fact, the second most popular treatment in cosmetic dentistry today is porcelain veneers. This type of treatment is very flexible, which makes it suitable in a number of situations. Ultimately, the application of customized shells of porcelain can lead one to feel completely different about the look of his or her smile, leading to a greater degree of confidence.
A number of cosmetic problems may be successfully treated with porcelain veneers, such as:
- A tooth or teeth are too long or too short
- A tooth or teeth are misshapen
- One or more teeth are out of proportion with other teeth in the smile
- Teeth are severely discolored or resistant to teeth whitening
- The smile is impacted by cracks, chips, or gaps
These problems and more can be covered with porcelain veneers in such a way as to promote the most natural-looking smile, as veneers are crafted into wafer-thin shells that, when bonded to teeth, look just as natural as if you had been born with them.
The process of receiving porcelain veneers in our office near Woodstock is simple and convenient. We begin with a thorough consultation in which we listen to the goals you have for your smile. The better we can understand what you love about your smile, and what you would like to improve, the more detailed we can be with the treatment we provide. During this appointment we also discuss the detail of treatment so that each step is understood, leading to greater confidence for an optimal outcome.
In order to design porcelain veneers, a small amount of enamel must be removed from the surface of the tooth or teeth to be treated. This step allows for the thickness of the veneer so that it will lie flush against the gums once bonded to the tooth. After teeth have been prepared, we will take impressions of the arch, and send the mold of your teeth to our state-of-the-art dental lab, where custom porcelain veneers will be made.
The process of making veneers in a dental lab takes about two weeks. During this time, after teeth have been prepared for their new veneers, a bit of sensitivity may occur with foods and beverages of various temperatures. This is because there is less enamel on the tooth to shield the nerve from external stimulation. Once the permanent veneers are bonded to teeth, sensations tend to return to normal.
