What are the wisdom teeth?
The wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth near the very back. Most patients have four – one in each corner. They typically come through in the late teen or early adult years. sometimes they do not break through at all. These are called “impacted” teeth and can be extremely painful for many patients.
Do we need our wisdom teeth?
Though it’s nice to have all the teeth in our mouth that we were meant to have, it is known that these teeth are often an issue. They can be removed without affecting the function of the smile. Most patients have them removed as a precaution, especially if they have undergone procedures such as orthodontia in which the new teeth could disrupt the alignment of the dental arch. Other patients wait until they experience a problem with their teeth. A dentist may also make a recommendation to remove the wisdom teeth if they are susceptible to periodontal disease.
