There are times when patients may be plagued with issues related to their wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth, more specifically referred to as the third molars, erupt into the back corners of the mouth. They are the last teeth to come in, often in the late teen years or early adulthood. However, many patients experience problems with these teeth. They may become impacted due to overcrowding or may be too far back in the mouth for patients to clean properly – resulting in a higher risk for periodontal disease and dental decay. Drs. Lan Vo and Sean Breckley, staff of 32 Dental, will recommend wisdom teeth removal whenever necessary for patients in the Woodstock, GA area.
Why remove the teeth?
Many patients are curious to know why they must remove these teeth.
There are many situations that may arise with the eruption (or lack of eruption) of wisdom teeth. First, impaction can occur. This means the teeth do not have the room to come through and therefore become stuck in the gums and bone. Most patients realize this problem is occurring when they experience pain and discomfort in the back of the mouth. Removal can resolve this issue. Additionally, if the teeth erupt through the gum line, they may cause misalignment of the dental arch due to overcrowding. This can undo orthodontic work that may have been done in the earlier years. Surgically removing these teeth before they come through the gum line eliminates this possible concern. Wisdom teeth that do come through are very far back in the mouth. Patients may have difficulty brushing and flossing these teeth properly, which can lead to the development of plaque and tartar, which can increase the risk of gum disease and cavities. Removal of these teeth can bring the smile back to health and reduce risks.
