Best practices for teeth extractions aftercare from your dental team near Acworth
As much as possible, dentists strive to preserve all natural teeth. Sometimes, however, the need for extraction arises. Teeth may need to be removed as a preliminary phase of orthodontic treatment, or because of advanced infection. When extraction is necessary, our team acts with great precision and gentleness, striving for the optimal result.
The extraction of teeth occurs in our office. Aftercare begins with us, but continues with the patient. To facilitate the most expedient, stress-free recovery, we seek to minimize the chance of complications by providing detailed post-operative care instructions. Two of the main concerns patients have after tooth extraction are pain and bleeding.
Pain management
A bit of soreness and mild discomfort is to be expected after teeth extractions. These sensations last only a few days with adequate aftercare. During the first 24 hours after the extraction procedure in our office near Acworth:
DO take the pain reliever recommended by your dentist. This may include a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen.
DO take pain-relieving medication while the numbness of local anesthetic is still active.
DON'T take aspirin to relieve pain. This may increase the chance of bleeding.
When teeth are extracted, it takes several hours for a blood clot to form in the socket. This clot is the same thing as a scab on your skin. Formation takes longer, however, than a wound on the skin due to saliva. As the clot forms, bleeding will stop.
DO bite down on sterile gauze or a clean cloth as needed. The gentle pressure against the extraction site reduces bleeding.
DO change gauze or cloth as needed to keep the area dry.
DO eat softer foods that require little to no chewing. Foods and the chewing movement may disrupt the healing process by inhibiting the formation of a clot.
DON'T drink through a straw for several days. Suction may dislodge the clot.
DON'T use tobacco products until the socket has completely healed.
Our team is available post-extraction to answer any questions our patients have. Contact Thirty-two Dental for more information about tooth extraction or our general dental services.
