Kennesaw, GA dentists explain why root canal therapy may be the only chance of saving your natural tooth
By Drs. Lan Vo and Sean Breckley
As baby teeth make way for permanent ones, most adults end up with 32 teeth. Our practice name, 32 Dental, alludes to the healthy development that ultimately leads to this full set of teeth. Drs Lan Vo, Sean Breckley and C. Carson Huynh have many procedures and products to prevent tooth loss, and to keep your teeth looking great and functioning in a healthy manner.
Saving your natural tooth with root canal therapy in Kennesaw, GA is among one of the most powerful ways to maintain or restore oral health at one of 32 Dental’s two practice locations. In fact, it may be the only way to save a badly damaged or badly infected natural tooth. Retaining natural tooth structure is preferred to extraction, if that tooth is cleared of harmful bacteria and diseased tissue. As much as Dr. Vo and the team are adept at replacing teeth with lifelike dental implants and bridges, there is no artificial tooth quite as exceptional in form and function as a natural, healthy tooth. Plus, 32 Dental takes great pride in preventive techniques and services that avoid the cost, time, and intervention to the treatment site that is associated with tooth replacement options, such as dental implants or dental bridges.
When you may need root canal treatment
32 Dental generally recommends check-ups every six months. That way, our dentists and hygienists can identify problems early, before they cause symptoms that can interfere with your school performance, work, family life, and quality sleep.
Even with the best care, problems can still arise. Root canal treatment involves removing inflamed and infected tissue in the inner part of the tooth, as well as carefully cleaning and shaping the root canal. This treated space is then filled and sealed, and eventually protected and preserved with a restoration such as a durable, beautiful-looking porcelain crown. This treatment may be recommended if you have:
Deep tooth decay
Undergone repeated procedures on the tooth, which further weakens it over time,
A worn or “faulty” crown, allowing bacteria to enter the tooth and re-infect it
Deeply cracked or chipped teeth that can’t be adequately restored with bonding, veneers, fillings, or crowns alone
Traumatic injuries resulting in pulp damage (even without the presence of visible chips and cracks)
You may want to call 32 Dental earlier (rather than later) should you experience any of the following potential symptoms of deep decay, pulp inflammation, and infection:
Sharp, jarring pain when biting down on foods
Persistent pain that lasts at least 30 seconds after eating or drinking hot or cold foods and beverages
Constant pressure and pain, as well as swelling and sensitivity when you touch the affected tooth (and the area around it)
Facial swelling, a foul taste, and/or fever, which may be indicative of a tooth abscess, caused by bacterial infection
If during an examination we determine root canal therapy is an appropriate way to save your damaged tooth, we’ll get you relief and a healthy, attractive smile in no time. Anesthetic ensures that you feel no pain during treatment. 32 Dental also has an array of sedative options, including IV sedation, available at its offices. So, you can have the most pleasant, fear-free procedure possible. A small protective sheet (dam) is placed to isolate the tooth and administered medications, and to keep it clean and dry throughout treatment. Your dentist will then access the inside part of the tooth through a small opening made in the crown. The area is cleaned, and the root canals are reshaped and filled with a rubberlike material to protect the treatment site and prevent re-infection. The root canals are sealed, and a temporary restoration is placed while a dental lab makes your permanent restoration.
In about two weeks, you’ll return to one of our Kennesaw GA offices. The temporary is removed and your custom-fabricated crown is bonded into place. With proper after-care in the hours and days following treatment, as well as ongoing good hygiene (at home and at our office), you can enjoy your root canal-treated tooth for years to come.

I've been seeing Dr. Breckley and Dr. Vo since they opened this practice, and I'm still a huge fan. I recently had some dental work done with them (like this morning). I've never doubted the doctors' abilities, and this experience was no exception. They are experts and are very good at their craft. I want to also mention the support staff, especially the women on the front desk. They are thorough, helpful, and so very nice. I've never experienced the follow-up and follow through at another practice as I have with them at 32 Dental. I always know what my bill will be. There are never any surprises, and that is so comforting in this day of American healthcare. :) I'll continue to refer my friends to them and patron their practice based on my experiences with them! Thanks!
