Marietta area patients are introduced to the three types of dentures available
32 Dental of the Marietta area provides patients with a wide selection of cosmetic and general dentistry services. Patients who need to restore their smile after tooth loss may be faced with many decisions—should they consider dental implants, dental bridges, or dentures? Drs. Lan Vo and Sean Breckley of 32 Dental are committed to helping patients determine the best solution for their dental needs, and in many cases, dentures may be the answer.
There are several types of dentures available today, partial dentures, full dentures, and overdentures.
Partial Dentures
Patients can use partial dentures to replace one or more teeth within a dental arch. These dentures are often made from quality acrylics and metals and they snap into place over the remaining teeth. These are similar to retainers worn after orthodontic treatment but utilize false teeth to replace those missing in the arch.
Full Dentures
Full dentures, are used when patients are replacing an entire arch of teeth. They may have lost their teeth due to aging, disease, or even extraction, which is done to prepare the smile for the placement of full dentures. These are made with quality acrylics, and they include false teeth and gum tissue. They can be held in place with natural suction or dental adhesives. To keep them from falling out of place, patients are encouraged to bring them to their regular recall appointments with their dentist to have any adjustments or changes made as necessary.
Overdentures
Patients with full dentures that do not stay in place even with adhesives and adjustments may consider alternatives such as overdentures. Overdentures are full dentures that are held in place with dental implants. Implants are placed into the jawbone, which use the natural bone structure to strengthen them and provide stability, and can be made to attach to full dentures for the optimum fit and function. Patients with overdentures can enjoy maintaining their natural bone structure, which in turns keeps their facial structure and shape looking great.
