When an individual is missing teeth, they have a variety of options when it comes to replacing the tooth with a restorative prosthesis, in order to give them a natural, flawless smile. One of these treatment options may include dental implants.
Dental implants are small titanium posts which are placed into the upper or lower jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for replacement teeth. A person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth and facial contours appear natural.
Another great use for dental implants is to help stabilize and provide strength to dentures. By placing a minimum of two dental implants, we are able to utilize these implants to help with denture retention on both the top and bottom part of our patient's mouth. Individuals that have been dealing with full sets of dentures will typically come in at a later date to have implants installed in order to give them strength and stability when they chew, bite, and go about their daily lives.
Dental implants have the highest success rate for replacing missing teeth and preserving facial bone structure. They require normal routine care after they have been completed, and look and act as natural teeth. Here at 32 Dental, we also have the ability to complete a tooth extraction and place a dental implant during the same visit, which is a great way to reduce dental visits and expenses for our patients.
Please call us for an appointment to see if you are a candidate for dental implants, or to talk with our dentists about alternatives such as dentures and bridges. At 32 Dental, we know that our patients will benefit greatly from dental implants in order to help them have the smile they want and deserve!
Aftercare for dental implants: Apply light pressure with gauze pads for the first hour following surgery, and limit yourself to calm activities to control bleeding. Avoid eating until all numbness has worn off. Apply ice packs 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours post surgery.
You may also rinse with warm salt water to further reduce swelling and discomfort. Drink lots of liquids. Eat only soft, nutritious foods, on the opposite side of your mouth, for the first 24 hours following your surgery. After the first 24 hours, you may return to your regular diet, but continue to chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
Use the prescription mouth rinse, chlorhexidine twice per day for one week. Don’t floss the teeth adjacent to the dental implant for two weeks. You should brush and floss your other teeth regularly. Take all medications prescribed by your dentist, even if you have no swelling or signs of infection. Do not smoke for 72 hours.
